Adult public route in transition: older HSE guidance, last reviewed in October 2024, says adult assessment is not provided. The HSE launched a new protocol on 26 May 2026 that includes adult self-referral, with regional implementation due to begin in Quarter 3 2026. Ask your GP or HSE region what is operating now.

What Happens in an Autism Assessment?

1. Background Interview

A psychiatrist or psychologist takes a detailed personal history: childhood development, school, relationships, sensory experiences, and social challenges. For child assessments, parents are interviewed separately.

2. Structured observation where appropriate

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) is a structured interaction assessment. The clinician observes communication, social interaction, and behaviour. Takes 45–90 minutes. Not all clinics offer this: ask before booking.

3. Questionnaires & Cognitive Testing

Standardised questionnaires (AQ, RAADS-R, SRS-2) supplement the observation. Some full assessments include cognitive and language testing to rule out other conditions and understand your profile.

4. Diagnostic Report

The provider should explain the written outcome, feedback and recommendations included. Keep a copy, but ask each receiving organisation what current evidence it requires because one report does not guarantee accommodations, benefits or services.

Autism Assessment in Ireland: FAQs

Does the HSE provide autism assessments for adults in Ireland?

Adult public access is in transition. Older HSE guidance says adult assessment is not provided, while the HSE protocol launched on 26 May 2026 includes adult self-referral with regional implementation. Ask your GP or HSE region what is operating now.

How much does a private autism assessment cost in Ireland?

Private pathway scope and price vary by age, professionals involved, assessment method and report. Confirm the complete current fee directly. Insurance reimbursement and tax treatment are not guaranteed.

What is ADOS-2 and why does it matter?

ADOS-2 is one structured observation tool a suitably trained clinician may use as part of an assessment. No single tool replaces clinical judgement. Ask why each tool is appropriate and confirm report requirements with the intended recipient.

Do I need a GP referral for a private autism assessment?

Most private autism clinics do not require a GP referral and accept self-referrals. However, bringing a GP letter summarising your history can be useful, especially if you want to access HSE supports after diagnosis.

Is a late autism diagnosis valid for workplace accommodations?

A report may support a workplace adjustment request, but acceptance and the information required depend on the individual process. Confirm current requirements with the employer or a qualified adviser.

Can I be assessed for both autism and ADHD at the same time?

Some providers describe combined ADHD and autism pathways. Ask which stages and professionals are involved, whether one or separate reports are produced, the complete current fee and whether the pathway is suitable for your purpose.
